In Tom Clancy's iconic novel, "The Hunt for Red October," a fictional submarine equipped with an undetectable propulsion system poses a grave threat to national security. While the story is a work of fiction, it draws attention to the concept of vulnerabilities that go unnoticed, much like zero-day vulnerabilities in the cybersecurity realm. As a former Data Systems Technician in the US Navy with a background in naval combat warfare, I have come to appreciate the parallels between naval military strategy and cybersecurity defenses. In this article, we will explore how the principles of naval operations can be applied to enhance cybersecurity strategies.
Tracking the Silent Threat
During my time in the Navy, I served on a destroyer tasked with tracking and hunting submarines. Our primary mission was to detect, study, and catalog these elusive vessels. To accomplish this, we relied on sophisticated sensors such as active and passive sonar and radar. Similarly, in the cybersecurity domain, Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solutions act as the eyes and ears of an organization, detecting and analyzing suspicious activities. Much like sonar technicians in the Navy, Security Operations Center (SOC) analysts sift through the noise to identify potential threats and study their behavior.
Defense in Depth
Naval battle groups employ a strategy known as defense in depth, which involves creating layered defenses to protect against various threats. Similarly, cybersecurity professionals utilize multiple security measures, such as Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR), firewalls, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), and email security solutions. These layers of defense ensure that if one security measure fails, others are in place to mitigate the risk. Additionally, just as ships must be properly maintained for battle readiness, organizations must prioritize patch management and vulnerability management to address weaknesses promptly and effectively.

Incident Response and Preparedness
In the Navy, drills and war exercises are conducted regularly to ensure readiness in the face of real-world threats. Similarly, organizations should conduct incident response and disaster recovery drills to test their cybersecurity defenses. These drills help identify gaps in the response process, refine procedures, and enhance overall preparedness. By practicing these scenarios, organizations can minimize the impact of a cyberattack and ensure a swift and effective response.
The Military Mindset
A military mindset can be invaluable when defending against cyber threats. The disciplined approach and attention to detail that are ingrained in military personnel translate well into the cybersecurity field. Just as naval experts are trained to anticipate the enemy's moves, cybersecurity professionals must think like hackers to stay one step ahead. This proactive mindset allows for the identification of vulnerabilities before they can be exploited, enhancing the overall security posture of an organization.
